Understanding each other can be challenging, even when we speak the same language. Growing up in a Laotian-American household, I often spoke Laotian and English at home. Honestly, my Laotian has gotten a bit rusty over the years. When I started making films, I didn’t fully realize the power of video in bridging two worlds. It’s not just about visuals; it’s about being understood in every sense.

Video translation plays a crucial role in ensuring that everyone can be heard. This inspired me to create my brand, Lao Legacy, and produce my documentary, “Across the Mekong” (2025). The film follows my grandparents’ journey from a refugee camp in Thailand to building a life in New Jersey. Their story is filled with courage, pain, and survival. It can only be fully honored if it's told with care and accuracy through video translation.

Translation is more than simply swapping one word for another. It’s about preserving tone, emotion, and cultural context. My grandparents light up when they hear their stories in their language, Laotian. It’s not just recognition, it’s belonging. For younger generations like mine, it’s a way to connect with our roots in a world that often encourages us to let go of them.

Through Lao Legacy, I aim to create content that resonates with Laotians, Americans, and people everywhere. I’ve realized how important it is that stories preserve their translation. Whether I’m captioning oral history interviews, subtitling a video, or translating my grandfather’s words with care, I’ve come to see how vital this work truly is.
